Getting Started with GPS is a 2.5-3 hour course, concentrating on practical field exercises to cover the key/core functions needed for navigating proficiently using a GPS. Course content:

  • GPS overview
  • Satellite aquisition and GPS accuracy
  • Position determination: GPS v map/compass
  • GPS operation: Screen layouts; key functions; menu structures
  • Main navigation set-up options
  • Marking and editing Waypoints
  • Creating single leg(GoTo) and multi-leg routes
  • Track logging and back tracking
  • GPS navigation exercises, including:
    • Marking/editing Waypoints
    • Navigating to Waypoints (GoTo routes)
    • Navigating multi-leg routes
    • Track logging and backtracking

Getting Started with GPS is normally conducted at the Langwarrin Flora & Fauna Reserve - an ideal location with numerous tracks and tree cover making it an ideal/realistic training environment. However it can be run at other open space environments preferred by the client, such as Jells Park; Westerfolds Park; Brimbank Park etc

Course participants need to wear clothing suitable for outdoor activities; good walking shoes; hats/sunscreen etc for solar protection.

Rain checks for days where weather conditions are unsuitable.

PC Management Extension: A 1hr (approx)  extension for associated PC management software (eg Garmin BaseCamp; Magellan VantagePoint) is available.  Course content:

  • Communications between GPS and PC
  • Setup options
  • Loading and displaying mapping on PC
  • Creating Waypoints; Routes and Tracks on PC
  • Transferring user data between GPS and PC (waypoints, routes, tracks)
  • Importing/exporting data
  • Moving map display/functionality
